bioCEED in Cape Town
In January, bioCEED (via Sehoya Cotner) joined an international group of ocean-science educators in Cape Town, South Africa for “Teaching SDGs and ocean science in higher education.” This three-day workshop was sponsored by the IAU (Association Internationale des Universités) Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Development (HESD) cluster, and the aim was to share experiences and practices at universities seeking to implement a whole-institution approach to sustainability at higher education institutions. Our overarching goal is to better engage with and integrate the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in teaching and learning in higher education globally. The event was co-coordinated by UiB’s Øyvind Fiksen, and UiB’s Katja Enberg gave a keynote, with students from the One Ocean Expedition, on Teaching sustainability while sailing across the Pacific. Sehoya also gave a short presentation on equity in ocean-sciences education, and joined a working group on Inequalities in Ocean or Climate education. Each working group submitted a short report, and a final product will be shared by IAU-HESD soon.
