New faces in the bioCEED UNIS family!

Marlena Wegner and Samira Terzenbach are the new bioCEED student representatives at UNIS during the fall semester.

Marlena Abril Wegner is currently a bachelor’s degree student in Biology. Her home university is the Freie Universität in Berlin. Since July, she is studying at UNIS where she follows two courses, AB 201 – Terrestrial Arctic Biology and AB 204- Arctic Population Ecology. Her main interest is in the Ecology of the Arctic. A hot topic since it is highly influenced by global warming.

For Marlena the involvement in bioCEED is the perfect opportunity to take part in the development of Biology education at UNIS. She thinks that especially the improvement of teaching is very important and only possible, if there is a good communication flow between students and teachers.  Marlena supports the idea of extracurricular activities for students and thinks it is great that they have the opportunity to learn more about their field of subject. Therefore, she will organise two bioSEMINARS and will share the responsibility for unisBREAKFAST with the current iEarth student representatives.

Samira Terzenbach is enrolled in the B.Sc. Biology program at University of Bremen. After studying eight months at the University of Oulu, Finland, she has been staying in Longyearbyen since the end of July and follows the UNIS course AB 204 – Arctic Population Ecology. With a background in physics and climatology, she is especially interested in ecosystem – climate interactions. Fascinated by the Arctic landscape, Samira enjoys being outside and is excited about fieldwork.

Participating in bioCEED gives her the opportunity to look behind the scenes of teaching and contribute to its continuous improvement. Eager to get fellow students in touch with skilled experts, young scientists, and their projects, she looks forward to co-organising extracurricular activities like the bioSEMINARs and unisBREAKFASTs and promoting UNISprout.
