Teach to Learn went on cruise during the course BIO325 Ocean Science!

Under the Teach to Learn project, a new series of video tutorials were realized by the MSc students during the course Ocean Science (BIO325), led by Anne Gro Vea Salvanes, professor at the Department of Biology, University of Bergen. The aim was to help their peers to better understand different sampling methods used to collect data for marine research.
Under the guidance of the TE2LE team, five groups of students produced video tutorials to answer the following questions:
- Tutorial 1 What is a Multisampler? and how is this technology used to study diurnal vertical migration of Mesopelagic fish?
- Tutorial 2 How do we measure environmental variables in the ocean?
- Tutorial 3 How do we estimate the abundance of a fish species in a fjord?
- Tutorial 4 How does a bottom trawl work and what can be learned from bottom trawling?
- Tutorial 5 What can we learn from using acoustics on-board a research ship and what do we use it for?
On the December 6th, students, professors, and administrative staff were invited to watch the video tutorials while enjoying some pizza and softdrinks!
During that event, Anne-Laure Simonelli, leader of the TE2LE project, collected feedback to evaluate the TE2LE activities. The audience also gave scores to the videos based on creativity and how well the message came through. The video with best score won a price.
Congratulations to Mari Vold Bjordal and Daniel Notvik, producers of the video “How do we estimate the abundance of a fish species in a fjord?” who won a gift certificate at a student bookshop!
